The industry is also much more professional, the supply chains and infrastructures necessary for success are now in place, and cost inefficiencies are being ironed out. The result for everyone is lower prices, and we can expect this trend to continue. However, the cost of organic food remains a complex issue. The fact that much of it is still perceived as expensive continues to dog the industry; as does the fact that organic food is consistently compared with the cheapest rather than with conventional food produced with comparable care and dedication.

It has its own accrediting body that approves and accredits those certification bodies who meet its own high standards, of which the Soil Association is one. The result is a simplification of the certification process for farmers wanting to export crops, plus reassurance for the consumer that imported crops certified by IFOAM-accredited organisations have been produced to the same high standards worldwide. In a ground-breaking initiative in 2001, Sainsbury’s announced that they would only buy imported organic products that met IFOAM’s standards.

The organisation was founded in 1946 by a group of farmers, scientists and nutritionists who were concerned about the way food was being produced, and who believed that there was a direct connection between the health of the soil, plants and animals, and people. Producing healthy food from healthy soils was of paramount importance, they believed, and the principles of the organisation’s founding fathers have guided their standards ever since. This has had a twofold outcome. First, there is no doubt that the Soil Association strives to set the highest standards at all times; it campaigns for high standards generally, and uses its influence wherever it can to see that organic standards retain their integrity.
