During the experiment, you will collect data. In this example, you might measure growth of the plants in centimeters or count the number of leaves. You might note color and condition of the leaves. By comparing the data collected from the control group with the data collected from the experimental group, you can draw conclusions. Because the two groups were treated exactly alike except for light, increased growth of plants kept in the light would allow you to conclude with confidence that more growth is a result of the one thing that was different: the availability of light.
Find a dandelion that has a white seed puff. Hold the seed puff above your prepared seed bed and gently blow so that the seeds become airborne and land inside the box. Put the cover on the box and place the box in a sunny spot. Observe your seed bed each day. The dandelion seeds will detach themselves from their parachutes and develop into seedlings. Observe your seedlings as they grow, and be sure to keep the lint or paper towels moist. Write your observations in your science notebook, noting the time and date and a description of what you see.
Early the next morning make a final weighing of each one. Which plant lost the most water through its leaves during the day? Which plant lost the least amount of water during the day? Two plants had their leaves coated with petroleum jelly, one on the upper sides of the leaves, the other on the lower sides. Based on the water losses of these two plants, are there more stomates on the lower or upper sides of leaves? What evidence do you have to support your conclusion? What did you learn about the effect of light on the rate at which transpiration takes place?
