The ﬁrst two approaches tend to emphasize the importance of relatively settled and self-contained national employment systems and their ‘societal effects’ (Maurice et al. 1986). However, the last two approaches emphasize that national social orders are characterized by internal tensions, conﬂicts, and change, and are also conditioned by their location in a ‘changing global order’ (Stubbs and Underhill 2000).
